Greetings everyone ! Need some recommendations. What are some good Cancer Hospitals in the States or where can I obtain a list ? I am presently serving overseas. My daughter; 3 and half, was diagnosed with ALL in August 2004 and is being treated here in Europe. In about a year and half, we will have to return to the States. I would like your comments on locations of cancer hospitals which will serve as a guide to where I need to be assigned. I sincerely appreciate your time and care in helping me plan for my family's future. b/r Max

Hi Max,
You can actually find a list of all the CureSearch Children's Oncology Group institutions right here on this site at http://www.curesearch.org/resources/cog.aspx
Click on any state, and all of the institutions within that state, as well as their contact information, will be displayed.
I know there are lots of great military hospitals in the US... Anyone out there who's child has been treated at a military hospital care to offer any advice on where to go?
Good luck!

Dodo,
I am certainly biased, because I work for CureSearch and was treated at CHLA in 1996 for osteosarcoma by doctors that are members of CureSearch--but it is my opinion that these are all great hospitals.
Part of being eligible for membership in CureSearch Children's Oncology Group (where all the research and treatment happens) is a strict criteria for standard of treatment and collaboration with other member institutions within the network. In essence, all of the hospitals that are members of CureSearch COG, and therefore are listed at the link above, have met the highest standards and are being "endorsed" by CureSearch.
As a result, your child should be receiving cutting-edge care in Boston--or at any other member insitution throughout the world. It's the beauty of cooperative research--sharing knowledge so that everyone gets the best treatment--and that treatment continues to get better and better.
Hope this helps you on your journey!

my son was diagnosed with Wilm's Tumor last year, he was treated at the Naval Hosp in San Diego, and I have heard nothing but good things about the Naval Hosp in Portsmouth, VA and CHKD in Norfolk. I have also heard good things about the hospital in FL. My husband is Navy, so I really only know what is around those bases, but if you want, I have made quite a few friends in different branches with their kids being treated where they are at. Email me anytime... navy_controllerswife@yahoo.com

We live in Richmond, VA and my son was treated for T-Cell ALL here in the area. He has been off treatment for almost 5 years - unbelievable!!!! I want to give you something else to think about - not that you don't already have enough on your mind! Research a good place to go through treatment and somewhere that also has a follow up clinic. These do exist, you just need to find them. I was not aware that these kids will be followed forever by many different disciplines. Therefore, we are now having to travel to Georgetown University Hospital because there was not a long term follow up clinic here in Richmond. Ironically, when we were in the process of changing his onocologists, the clinic here in Richmond realized the need for the late effects follow up clinic and it is just now getting off the ground, however, it was too late for us. We have received outstanding care of Georgetown! You need excellent care during and after treatment because, not to scare you, but when she finishes treatment, you begin another journey. I want to tell you that because no one told me. I was told that a year off treatment everything would be back to "normal". However, I also want to tell you that my son's treatment included high doses of prednisone, methotrexate and vincrinstine and cranial radiation. I have seen the kids with ALL come through much better than my son because of the different treatments. You will make the right decision! Good luck!

I'm new to the boards...so this may be a little out of date....but if anyone is looking for a great hospital on the west coasts...I highly reccommend Doernbecher's in Portland, Oregon. Alot of great care and research goes on there...my own daughter has been receiving excellant care there for the last year. Best wishes.

Dear Max, You might want to look into St. Judes research Hospital in Tennessee. It was a dream and started by the actor Danny Thomas. They treat regardless of your ability to pay whether you have insurance or not. They only work with pediatric Cancers so they have all the most up to date protocal and treatments and also experimental tx. They provide you (1 parent and the child) with living accomdations and they are just a superb facility. I have a friend that was treated there at the age of 6 - she is now 28 - for ALL. When she was dx the survival rate was dismal -now it is great - but she recovered and has been cancer free for 16 years and doing wonderful!! There are quite a few good childhood cancer facilities but I believe that St. Judes is the best!! I hope your little girl is doing well and I wish you lots of luck! Susan
